That’s the question that faces sixteen-year-old Max Klein when the accidental deaths of his historian parents leave him with an ancient artifact that etches a disappearing and reappearing tattoo on his arm—a tattoo that allows him to conjure famous people from history. Once they’ve been conjured, Max absorbs their intellectual and physical abilities for one hour.

Sounds like fun, but with great power comes even greater problems: First, a lot of people want the secret of Max’s powers. And some are willing to stop at nothing to get it. Second, conjuring takes a serious physical toll on his health. If he does it too much, it could permanently damage or kill him. Third, sometimes the conjured person fights for control of Max’s body and mind. 

Similar to Anthony Horowitz’s Alex Rider series and James Patterson’s Maximum Ride series, The Hour Thief series is non-stop action combined with mystery and suspense. Each novel features a self-contained story while also taking us deeper into finding out where the artifacts come from, how they work, and why they are here. Hint: they aren’t magical.
