Harper sat on the toilet seat. Thomas, squatting directly behind her, balanced on the metal water pipes that ran to and from the back of the toilet. She was dressed in the uniform they had stripped from the young security guard. They still needed another uniform for Thomas.
The toilet was black, the floor tile was black, the sinks and urinals were black. Everything shiny black except the bright white toilet paper, which by contrast seemed like a tongue hanging out of the mouth of a panting beast.
“I don’t like black toilets,” Harper said. “They make going too ominous. Like we’re performing dark magic or something.” She knew she was babbling, but she was nervous. After everything those scientists had said about Lab A, she was frightened by what she might find there. She didn’t want to think about what they had done to Rachel.
Harper looked at her watch. “What makes you think someone will come in here? There’s a Code Red going on?”
