Thomas sprinted for the sliding Plexiglas door, which he’d kept ajar with a fire extinguisher. The man in the observation booth must have just arrived, for he was wandering around the room, checking the equipment. He caught a glimpse of movement out of the corner of his eye and looked up. He seemed to notice Thomas and Harper for the first time. He looked at the computer screen, puzzled. Then he saw the fire extinguisher holding the door open.
Thomas measured another thirty feet to the door, which in a dead run on the street he could cover in a few seconds. But now he was dodging trees, leaping bushes, pushing through heavy leaves the size of beach umbrellas. By the time Thomas finally cleared the jungle maze, he saw the fire extinguisher rolling along the path toward him. The man in the booth had used the robotic arm in the decontamination room to dislodge the metal tank.
“Damn!” Thomas said.
